Classifications for Indoor Finishing Materials/Surface Paints
Materials used as the finished face of walls and ceilings are typically described as having a fire resistance rating of either Class A, B or C. These classifications are based on the rate at which flame spreads across them and smoke is developed, when they are exposed to an open flame.
The Steiner Tunnel Test (ASTM E84) is the method by which materials are tested to determine their performance in a fire event and how they are assigned a proper classification.
Using these three classifications, the International Building Code (IBC) and the NYC Building Code dictate allowable classes to be used throughout a building, based on the use of the space and the need to protect it and its occupants in a fire event.
Test Results for Flame Spread and Toxicity
Attached are the Surface Burning ASTM E84 (UL723) Test and the UPITTT (University of Pittsburgh) toxicity test results for Polyester finishes.
Polyester is a Class A finishing material that meets IBC and NYC building code requirements.
Leed Compliance
Polyester is also LEED compliant having a VOC of less than 275 grams/liter as established by the LEED Rule IEQc4.2 on Low Emitting Coatings.
Specifying Polyester & Polyurethane
The Architectural Woodwork Standards (AWS) is the guide used for the specification, construction, and installation of interior architectural millwork.
AWS includes and addresses compliance criteria for finishing standards.
Properly specifying finishes is vital in clearly addressing your project needs as related to the finishing process; mechanical and chemical strength of the coatings, longevity, sustainability, etc.
Furthermore, properly specifying the finish ensures that you have absolute control over the final decision made on what type of finish is to be used on your project (ex: specifying ‘Lacquer’ can mean using anything from a catalyzed lacquer to a polyester. The terminology is vague and creates a gray area that is left open to interpretation).
